So, here I am, blogging for money while my little boy sat on my dunlopillo thigh watching Ratatouille.

Ratatoullie won the best animation Oscar and you should watch it if you haven’t. I have watched it like 5 times already.

Moments like these, i.e. son sitting on my lap watching movie while I blog for money are the reasons blogging is so much fun.

Chinese New Year is really over and finally, my kid gets to open his angpows. It is a little rule that I set for them that they are not suppose to dig and note down who gives them how much. I like to remind them that it is not the money that counts but how many angpows they get. More angpows mean more relatives and friends and that’s more important.

Moreover, there is no plus and minus as it is basically an exchange of gifts. Since we have so many kids, we normally make our angpow bigger so that if those who have only one or two kids give my four kids angpow, at least I can reciprocate with a bigger sum to contra. You know, I normally avoid giving angpows to those with one kid because I hate the thought of people giving back four packets. Really pai seh wan.

Therefore, today my little boy finally get to open all the angpows. I am keeping the video because children grow so fast. One minute you are a new mom or new dad like Terence (nah give your link liao, tiu) dealing with night feedings and diapers changing like Terence (nah, another link liao, niamah) and the next minute, the little kid can count money liao.

My little boy can count his angpows already. Totally 17 packets this time.

Fuyoh, thank God, praise the Lord! I should have changed them into US dollar and put in the angpows hor? Never mind, hopefully, next year Chinese New Year I give angpows in British pounds. One can dream, right?

Festivals are only meaningful if we have something to do to welcome it. All these culture and traditions that are unique must be preserved and practised because one day, when I am long gone, I hope my kids have something to tell their children. I suppose these are all the tiny jigsaw [...]

Times must be bad. I went to the regular Cantonese dried foodstuffs shop, Kwong Tuck and there were not many customers there. Normally, at this time of the year, it will be so packed, you cannot even get the attention of the shop assistants. Imported sausages and waxed ducks would have been sold out by now. But surprisingly, the shop was empty!

I got the above and a lot of other food stuffs. Got home and assembled my things for photos.

My little boy asked me,

“MOMMY!!!! What’s that?”

I told him, “Just now mommy went to the shop and buy a bunch of the uncle’s hair? Wait tonight mommy cooks for you mum-mum, ok?”

“EWWWSSSSS!!!!! UWEKKKKK”

This, my dear friends, is a bunch of moss. It is looks like hair and is an important symbolic cooking ingredients. It is call ‘fatt choy’ in Cantonese or rhymes with prosperity. I think I have just turned off my poor little boy from ever eating fatt choy for the rest of his life because he will be thinking of the uncle’s hair. Recipe for Hoe Si Fatt Choy is over here.

The Chinese pussy willow I have at home has bloomed into tiny white, furry flowers.

The ‘chai’ I have at home. Been meaning to get one of those ‘Christian’ type of red cloth but I have yet to find one with all the dangling coloured threads and sequins. Right now, the one I have says ‘whole living room fill with gold and jade’ (kum yoke mun thong) with the 8 fairies. Bought that many, many years ago before I turned to Christianity and I think this piece of thing costs RM180. I still have the other red cloth used to ‘pai thnee kong’ (pray to heavenly god) on the ninth day of Chinese New Year. That piece of red cloth used to wrap around the table costs me RM350. It is too expensive to be thrown away so I kept it.
